As part of her sentence in a 2007 animal cruelty case, Streator resident Brianna E. Lupori was prohibited from possessing animals while on probation.
Print this storyThis week a prosecutor said she had animals in her possession — three dogs and five cats. The 24-year-old Lupori pleaded guilty Dec. 21, 2007, to one count of animal cruelty and two counts of violating an animal owner's duties. In May 2007, authorities found three live dogs and 13 cats, as well as one dead dog and two cats in Lupori's house. It wasn't clear if Lupori was living there at the time. The house was filled with trash and feces, but without food or water available to the animals. Lupori was sentenced to pay $1,273 restitution to Illinois Valley Animal Rescue and Pet Project near Grand Ridge for their handling of the dogs and cats taken from her home, to undergo a mental health evaluation and to be on conditional discharge — a loose form of probation — until Dec. 21, 2009. During the conditional discharge Lupori was not to possess animals. However, a representative of Illinois Valley Animal Rescue in Peru learned a woman suspected to be Lupori, but with the last name Sawyer, was seeking to serve as a foster owner for animals through an animal rescue service. The representative also knew Lupori was not to possess animals. The representative arranged with the service to do a home visit at Lupori-Sawyer's home. Once there, the representative talked to Lupori-Sawyer and took a photograph of her holding a dog. An animal humane investigator familiar with Lupori was consulted and confirmed the woman pictured was the woman convicted of animal cruelty under the name Lupori. The information then was given to the La Salle County State's Attorney's Office. Assistant State's Attorney Ryan Cantlin filed a petition to have Lupori's conditional discharge revoked, saying she had three dogs and five cats. Notice was sent Lupori she is set for a hearing Wednesday, Sept. 16. If her conditional discharge is revoked, she would be resentenced, facing jail, a fine or a new probation term. A few years ago, Lupori ran an unlicensed service for unwanted and abandoned pets. In February 2006, authorities removed 42 cats, nine puppies and three or four adult dogs from Lupori's house because of poor conditions. Lupori was permitted to keep a few cats at that time, but her pet service was shut down. The city of Streator fined Lupori for the condition of the house. |
