Pontiac-based state police said a trooper found almost 2,000 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop Monday in Livingston County.

The trooper stopped a northbound semi-trailer rig on Interstate 55 to do a safety inspection. It turned out the driver — Jose Garcia of Edinburg, Texas — did not have a valid interstate commercial driver's license. Police said Garcia then gave an inconsistent story, prompting the trooper to have a police dog walk around the rig. After the dog apparently detected drugs, the trailer was searched. Officers found 1,860 pounds of marijuana in plastic-wrapped bales hidden among vegetables being shipped from Texas.

The 39-year-old Garcia was taken to the Peoria County Jail, but police would not say why he was taken there. However, defendants facing federal charges in central Illinois are often held there.
