As this year's lead artist, Hugo Heredia wanted to play up the jazz aspect of the fourth annual Artinifest and All That Jazz artwork.
Print this storyFor the first time, a jazz band will play at Heartland Illinois Division of March of Dimes fundraiser, set for Friday, Aug. 14, at Senica's Oak Ridge Golf Club. The jazz concert will be performed by Erin Shields, an Oglesby native; David Shenton; and Mark Wade, all of New York. "I'm excited about that. (Guests) get a nice treat," Heredia said Monday at the Meet the Artists Media Night at Senica's Oak Ridge. "This is getting to be a really nice event." March of Dimes Division Director Lori Christopherson said Artinifest has featured background music at past events and is excited to offer live music this year. Artinifest moves from the Ottawa Boat Club to a bigger venue, Senica's Oak Ridge, this year. "They're going to step it up a little," said Artinifest artist Julie Jenkins, of Peru. "A little more classy. A little bigger." Jenkins is participating for the third time and has already finished her artistic glasses for this year, which she said have an abstract jazz influence because of this year's performance. "It's so much fun," said Julie Jenkins, of participating in Artinifest. "It's done really well in the past." For those who would rather not paint wine glasses, Heredia said Artinifest expanded its mediums this year to include coasters, trays and other barware. Painting martini glasses can be a challenge, Heredia said, since you have to find a specific type of paint, but now in his fourth year as an Artinifest artist, he's learned the right techniques. "I really enjoy it and it's for a good cause," said Heredia, owner of In Visual Technologies in Spring Valley. "It's a great event for the art community." Heredia is taking inspiration from his artwork for his glasses. He's taking a piece featuring four people dancing and putting each one of them on their own glasses, putting their figures in black with a solid color design. The winning bidder will receive the printed frame artwork as well. To date, 16 artists have signed up. Christopherson hopes to sign up 20 to 25 local artists. Anyone interested can call March of Dimes at 815-223-3221. This year's goal is $15,000. Last year the event raised $12,000. "In this financial climate, I'd really be happy as long as we'd have a year over budget," Christopherson said. Four martini bar stations also will sell martinis for $5 to benefit March of Dimes.Attendants also will have the opportunity to win two round trip tickets to New York to see "Bye Bye Birdie" and backstage passes. Attendants must be present to win. Sponsored by Illinois Valley Cellular, In Visual Technologies, Diane's Frame & Easel and Senica's Oak Ridge Golf Club, Artinifest and All That Jazz starts at 5:30 p.m. with a silent auction until 7:30 p.m. The jazz concert, with general admission seating, starts at 7:45 p.m. and lasts until 9:15 p.m. The final silent auction bidding is at 9:15 to 10 p.m. Tickets cost $35 apiece, which includes a souvenir martini glass for the first 200 guests.
