The address remains a mystery, but plans have been made to name the location for the proposed Illinois Valley Community College Ottawa satellite campus on Monday morning.

Representatives from the city and the college plan to meet at 9 a.m. at the proposed location to make the announcement. Media outlets will be informed of the location just hours before the event.

Ottawa officials and IVCC administrators have been working on this proposal for about six months. So far, the proposal would involve the city purchasing a building then leasing space to the college to stage classes. The city is considering waiving the lease payments for the first year to allow IVCC to market the new campus.

The new campus would be aimed at serving the eastern part of IVCC's district by creating a location that is closer and more convenient than the Oglesby campus. IVCC President Jerry Corcoran reported students living on the east side of the district comprise 40 percent of the credit hours taken now.

The satellite campus is not a done deal. The IVCC Board of Trustees will hear a formal presentation during its regular meeting Thursday, July 23.

At least one trustee, David Mallery from Hennepin, has expressed reservations about the proposal, fearing the eastern campus could draw students away from the main campus. He has asked administrators to create a method to track how well the new campus is drawing new students and generating additional credit hours.

Corcoran has also noted that if the Ottawa satellite center is created, he would like to work with Northern Illinois University to bring in courses for those seeking a bachelor's or a master's degree.
