Even though it"s summertime, United Way is rallying support for its School Tools program with a call for donations.
Print this storyPeople can drop off supplies at the school bus on display at Lafayette and La Salle streets during the "Building Minds, Building Futures," a family day in the park from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Washington Park in Ottawa. School Tools helps equip economically disadvantaged students grades kindergarten through 8 with the basic learning supplies they need. This year marks the 10th consecutive year United Way and SABIC Innovative Plastics will partner. They expect to distribute 1,600 supplies to local, low-income students, so children have the basic supplies needed for a successful school year. Last year, more than $10,000 worth of supplies was distributed to area schools. This year, volunteers will be at the day in the park to help sort donated supplies. There is no cost to the student or the area schools that participate. Parents can inquire at their local school to receive supplies.
