Fishing derby attracts 41 participants

The results of the St. Columba School fishing derby Saturday, June 6, at Allen Park in Ottawa are as follows:

Winners of the cumulative fish weight caught:
  • Ages 6 and younger: Travis Dougherty of Ottawa
  • Ages 7 to 9: Kelby Swanson of Ottawa
  • Ages 10 and older: Alex Brooke of Ottawa
The winner of the biggest overall fish was Kelby Swanson, who caught a fish weighing more than 5 pounds.

Winners received a medal, cash prize, gift certificates and tackle boxes.

St. Columba Parents Club sponsored the fishing derby. The derby was open to children ages 4 to 14. A total of 41 children participated with 61 total fish caught.

Ottawa police officer Brenden Donahue was at the derby providing Safe Child ID kits for all the children participating.

A raffle also followed the fishing. Donated raffle prizes varied from autographed photos of Reed Johnson of the Chicago Cubs and Jim Thome of the Chicago White Sox, gift certificates to local merchants, passes to Peoria Chiefs games, as well as passes to places such as the Shedd Aquarium and the Chicago Children's Museum.
