Two men died in a one-vehicle crash Friday night in Streator.

Rafael Rico, 24, Spring Valley and Jaime Arevalo, 46, Streator, were pronounced dead at the scene. Juan Mendoza, 45, was taken to OSFSt. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, where he was listed Saturday afternoon in critical condition, but was upgraded by Sunday to fair condition.

The pickup containing the men hit a tree and turned onto its side at about 9:07 p.m. in the 1200 block of North Bloomington Street — Route 23 — about where the four-lane street splits. After the crash, smoke came from the engine area. Arevalo was the driver. Police are investigating.
