AREA ROUNDUP: Lady Irish win Class 2A Regional championship

Lady Knights top host Pontiac in 2A semifinals

BRAIDWOOD — The No. 6 seed Seneca Lady Irish defeated the second-seeded Reed-Custer Lady Comets 62-54 in the championship game of the Reed-Custer Class 2A Regional on Thursday night.

Seneca outscored Reed-Custer 33-20 after the break.

Rita Jashari scored 18 points to lead the Lady Irish. Mara Bruno posted a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Brooklyn Giertz and Madison Bromberek contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Seneca (25-7) advances to the Wilmington Sectional, where they will face either top-seeded Prairie Central or No. 4 seed Wateska on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Fieldcrest 41, Pontiac 38

At Pontiac, the second-seeded Lady Knights defeated the No. 8 seed Lady Indians in the semifinals of the Pontiac Class 2A Regional.

Fieldcrest led 6-2 after one quarter and 16-9 at the half. The Lady Knights trailed 27-24 through three periods of play before outscoring Pontiac 17-11 during the final stanza.

Hannah Baker scored a dozen points to lead Fieldcrest. Ella Goodrich (7 of 7 free throws) and Samantha Vazquez each added nine points.

The Lady Knights (27-4) will square off versus fifth-seeded El Paso-Gridley for the championship Friday at 7 p.m.

Boys basketball

Earlville 69, Leland 30

At Earlville, the Red Raiders (16-13, 4-3) beat the Panthers in a Little Ten Conference game.

Landon Larkin scored 23 points to lead Earlville. Michael Sansone added 17 points.

Freshman boys basketball

Marquette 59, Hall 48

At Spring Valley, Bryce Sharp posted a double-double — scoring 23 points and grabbing 13 rebounds — to lead Marquette to the win over Hall. Griffin Walker added 15 points. Alex Graham contributed a dozen points and dished out five assists.
