PHOTO: Contamination remediation underway at Ottawa site

Workers begin removing radiation-contaminated soil Monday at the site known as the NPL-8 Frontage Property, located along the Fox River near U.S. 6 and Route 71 in Ottawa. The contamination originated from waste and demolition debris from the Radium Dial Company and Luminous Processes Inc., according to the EPA. The area will be capped to prevent further exposure to people. The EPA has cleaned up 15 of 16 radiation-contaminated areas in Ottawa, with this site being the last cleanup site. Work is expected to continue until fall.
