Former Sandwich Mayor Richard A. Olson will pay a $750 fine and serve one year of court supervision after pleading guilty Wednesday morning in an Ottawa courtroom to solicitation of sex.

Olson, 66, Sandwich, was charged along with eight other men with solicitation of a sexual act, as the result of a sting operation conducted in March by the La Salle County Sheriff’s Office. The crime was punishable by a fine of up to $2,500, and probation or up to a year in jail.

When asked for comment, Olson said the guilty plea speaks for itself. He added he wants to move on.

As a result of his guilty plea, Olson must also give his fingerprints to authorities.

Olson served as Sandwich’s police chief for 16 years. He was elected mayor in 2013 and was in the middle of his second term when he resigned shortly after charges were made against him.

One of the nine charged, a 29-year-old Streator man pleaded guilty and was fined $500.
