During Tuesday's Committee of the Whole meeting, Streator Councilman Ed Brozak said he found a few contractors within the city working without a license.
"They came back after and paid for the license, but I think there should be a fine for knowingly working without a license," Brozak said. "We shouldn't have to chase you down to get a license. If you get caught, it should cost you double."
Mayor Jimmie Lansford said there should be no problem adding a penalty for unlicensed contractors and this is a problem that happens often.
"Landscapers, contractors and whatnot come in and take the money quickly and go before we can do anything," Lansford said. "We'll have to reach out to the police about stricter enforcement."
No action was taken Tuesday, but future action on this issue could take place at meetings in the coming months.
