For the 36th year, Indian Valley Theatre in Sandwich will continue its summer tradition of offering its Summer Children’s and Tween/Teen Workshops.
The workshops offer incoming first-graders to graduating high school seniors a chance to learn about theater and build their confidence performing. Students will be introduced to the many facets of theater including building sets, props, costuming and understanding the basics of putting on a show. They will rehearse a play as well as participate in theater games and activities to develop poise, voice, confidence and movement and create an understanding of the characters for the play.
This year, the workshop will present “The Sasparilla Kid and the Bally Hoo Belle Gang,” written by Alethia Hummel, for the first- through sixth-grade group. Each child will be cast in a part adapted to fit their specific talents and needs. The class schedule will be 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, June 10-21. Performances will be 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 21, and 2 p.m. Saturday, June 22. Registration is due by Friday, June 7.
The Summer Tween/Teen workshop is for students entering seventh grade in fall 2019 through newly graduated high school seniors. The class schedule will be 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, July 15-26, with two performances on Saturday, July 27. This year, the Tween/Teen Workshop will perform “The Snow Queen” by Hans Christian Andersen, adapted by Evelyn Merritt. Registration is required by Monday, July 8.
All classes and performances for both workshops are at the Historic Sandwich Opera House, 140 E Railroad St., Sandwich. Students are expected to attend all classes and final student performances. A fee is involved for the program. A workshop T-shirt is included in the fee. If three or more children are being registered from the same family, a discount is available.
