To the Editor:
I want to compliment Mayor Eschbach and the City Council for planning to have an entrance sign greet visitors to our fair city placed south of I-80 on the west side of Route 23.
The design is very attractive and the planned landscaping completes the look very appropriately for the historic river town that we are. I would even call it classy.
Some council members, however, expressed a preference for an electric sign advertising city events. I urge the council to reject that idea.
People who want to know what is going on in Ottawa learn about it easily through our newspaper, radio and Visitor Center, which does a great job through its website, social media and paid advertising.
A good entryway sign identifies the town and reflects something about the community. Tone is important. A flashing electric sign shouts “come here and spend your money.”
We want people to feel welcome, not that we are trying to fleece them. If they spend money while they are here, terrific.
