How do you think your school district does at managing the property tax rate?
Seneca Grade School has always kept a close watch on spending. Without knowing the in-depth financials, I think things appear to be being managed properly. I do know there are really great teachers, assistants, maintenance, and custodians that work at the school, and I want to make sure all of their needs are being met.
Rate the quality of education the district is providing.
I attended Seneca Grade School, and so did all of my siblings. We all received a quality education from Seneca's many great teachers. State requirements and constant curriculum changes obviously take a toll on the teachers and assistants. I would like to talk to the teachers and see what their thoughts are about what needs to be changed. They are the ones doing the teaching on the front lines, so they are the answer. I know there are many former Seneca students who are now teachers and would love to get back into the school but have not been given the opportunity. I think there is something to be said about building a culture in which people want to come back to work, teach, and live.
What are your priorities for the next 4 years?
My number one priority is making sure the students continue to receive a quality education. Also, it is important to make sure the teachers, assistants, maintenance, and custodians are treated fairly. The people of Seneca are proud of Seneca Grade School, and I want that to continue.
What do you see as the biggest issue facing your school district and how you would address it?
Like most schools, the most pressing issue is money. We need to make sure we are financially stable not only in the present but also for years to come.
What do you see as the school board member’s role?
There is a superintendent to oversee the schools. The principals run the north and south campus. The school board member’s role is to make sure these people are doing their jobs, and the school finances are in line. School board members oversee spending and ensure that all needs are being met. I also think it is critical that we have open lines of communication and the teachers and support staff are being treated fairly.
