Crime in Illinois topic of Newark library program

An upcoming program at Newark's library will examine corruption in Illinois government.

"The Illinois Rogues Gallery: Our Infamous Politicians" will be presented by David Clark at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Charles B. Phillips Library, 6 N. Jackson St., Newark.

The stories of jailed former governors George Ryan and Rod Blagojevich are familiar, but public corruption in Illinois is nothing new, the library said in a news release. Since 1976, federal prosecutors secured more than 1,800 convictions of public officials statewide. Clark's program will explore whether Chicago and Illinois will ever be “ready for reform.”

The event is open to the public.

Additional programs in February include:

Friday Matinee: A viewing of "Operation Finale" is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15. Refreshments and popcorn will be provided.

Read to Sydney the Therapy Dog: Children can come to the library at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, to read to Sydney the Therapy Dog. This program is designed to help encourage children to improve their literacy skills. Sydney and her handler have been certified by an accredited organization. Registration ends on Monday, Feb. 18; limited spots are available.

Lego Club: Valentine's Day is the inspiration of Lego Club this month. Lego enthusiasts will be challenged to make an object based on something they love. The program begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27. Registration is required.
