AREA ROUNDUP: State-ranked Sandwich girls run perfect record to 21-0

BRAIDWOOD — Make it 21.

The Class 3A No. 9 state-ranked Sandwich Lady Indians (21-0, 7-0) beat host Reed-Custer (17-6, 5-3) in an Interstate Eight Conference game Thursday night, 49-20, to remain unbeaten on the season and in I-8 play.

Josie Ness scored 14 points to lead Sandwich. Jaylynn Vana added 11 points, while Sarah Ness and Ava Knepper each had 10.

Serena 52, Hiawatha 19

At Serena, the Lady Huskers beat the Hawks in a Little Ten Conference game.

Serena (10-14, 4-2) was up 12-0 after one quarter, 32-6 at the half and 42-15 through three periods of play.

Katie Baker scored 19 points, which included a trio of 3-pointers, grabbed nine rebounds and had three steals to lead the Lady Huskers. Susan Tuftie snared seven boards. Kallie Cantlin and Elly Kuhn swiped four steals apiece.

Newark 70, Hinckley-Big Rock 43

At Hinckley, the Lady Norsemen (14-6, 6-0) beat the Lady Royals in an LTC game.

Jocelyn Mitchell scored 20 points and swiped eight steals to lead Newark. Kaitlyn Hatteberg posted a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Meggie Scott added 15 points and dished out eight assists.

Flanagan-Cornell 43, Fisher 32

At Fisher, the Lady Falcons defeated the Bunnies in a Heart of Illinois Conference game.

Flanagan-Cornell led 8-2 after one quarter, 22-9 at the half and 31-26 through three periods of play. Jadyn Mitchell scored 14 points and Regan Reed (three 3-pointers) 13 to lead Flanagan-Cornell.

Fieldcrest 53, El Paso Gridley 44

At Minonk, the Lady Knights defeated the Titans in an HOIC game.

Fieldcrest (14-8, 5-4) led 13-4 after one quarter, 28-15 at the half and 43-29 through three periods of play. Hannah Baker scored 24 points, which included going 14 of 19 from the free-throw line, to lead the Lady Knights. Madi Hock added 10 points.

Boys basketball

Rockford Christian Life 79, Leland 59

At Leland, Jarred Fries had a career-high 19 points for the Panthers (2-14) during their nonconference loss to the Eagles. Dawson Whitaker had a dozen points.

Ottawa 51, Rochelle 22

At Rochelle, the Pirates beat the Hubs in their Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division dual finale.

Posting wins for Ottawa (12-7 overall, 2-2 NIB 12 West) were Austin Howard, Riley Hanson, Cole Flores, Luke Fleming, Bradley Ruger, Austin Stanley, Michael Morse, Nick Stehl and Jaxson Callahan.

"Overall, we wrestled very well tonight," Pirates coach Pete Marx said. "The kids all fought and gave great effort. ... Excellent work tonight!"

Manteno 48, Streator 12

At Manteno, the Bulldogs lost a pair of Interstate Eight Conference duals to the Panthers and Tigers.

Posting wins for Streator were Rafael Pantoja, Josh Carter, Seth Miles, Tre Mckinnie, Walker McClellan and Brian Smith.

At Coal City, the Indians split a pair of I-8 duals, beating the Comets and losing to the Coalers.

Posting wins for Sandwich against Reed-Custer were Evan Reilly at 106 pounds, Austin Sinetos (126), Aiden Linden (132), Cael Schindlbeck (138), Dylan Limon (145), Devon Zuck (152), Eddie Brown (160), Jackson Murphy (170), Wyatt Murphy (182) and Connor Holly (195).

Recording the lone victory versus Coal City was Cael Schindlbeck at 138 pounds.

The Fighting Irish split a pair of I-8 duals, losing to the Wildcats and beating the Sentinels.

Posting wins for Seneca against Wilmington were Wilson Widman (at 113 pounds), Joey Hatz (152), Gavin Robertson (182) and Jacob Hampton (285).

At Kingman Gym on Wednesday, Aaron Threadgill scored 13 points to lead the Vikings to the NIB 12 West win over Geneseo. Javarious Whitfield and Luke Cushing contributed six and five points, respectively.

At Oglesby, the Lady Eagles opened Arrowhead Conference play by defeating Sauk Valley Community College.

Blair Bullock scored 18 points to lead IVCC. Marquette Academy graduate Maddie Dougherty added 10 points. Earlville High School alumna Emily Cook contributed eight points.
