Cornell College junior forward and former Serena High School standout basketball player Mozelle Kempiak helped the Rams to Midwest Conference wins over Knox College and St. Norbert College last week.
Kempiak had five points and five rebounds in a 62-49 triumph over Knox and then exploded for a career-high 19 points, to go along with six rebounds, two steals and a pair of assists, in a 55-48 victory over St. Norbert. The pair of wins improved Cornell to 4-7 overall and 4-2 in the loop.
On the season, Kempiak is averaging 8.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per outing.
North Central College defeated visiting Elmhurst College 82-70 this past Saturday in a key early-season College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tilt. Will Clausel (So., Newark) had 14 points, two rebounds and a blocked shot for the Cardinals (12-4, 4-2), while Colin Bomstad (So., Earlville) played six minutes but did not score for the Bluejays (9-5, 4-1). The teams will meet again Feb. 16.
Clausel has played in 15 games this season for NCC and is averaging 6.1 points, 2.3 rebounds and is hitting on 57 percent of his shots from the floor. Bomstad has appeared in 12 games for EC, is posting 3.3 ppg and has nailed 11 of 31 (36 percent) attempts from beyond the arc.
Milwaukee Area Technical College (15-2) has captured 13 consecutive wins, including a pair of triumphs last week. D'Angelo Young-Pryor (So., Streator) was solid for the Stormers in the pair of games, registering 12 points and four rebounds in a 120-65 win over Harper College and following that up with an 18-point, six-rebound, three-steal performance in a 107-73 triumph over College of DuPage. On the year, Young-Pryor is second on the club averaging 14.5 points per game, leads the team with 9.7 rebounds per contest and is hitting 62 percent of his field-goal attempts.
Addison Bode (So., Somonauk) is averaging 4.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists this season for Waubonsee Community College (8-7).
Indiana University East and Keating Rombach (Jr., Ottawa) picked up a pair of River States Conference wins last week. Rombach had 12 points and a pair of rebounds in the Wolves' 78-67 victory over Ashburn University and then poured in a season-high 15 points, including a trio of hoops from beyond the arc, and five rebounds in a 80-74 win against Alice Lloyd College. IUE (12-6, 4-1) is ranked No. 16 in the latest NAIA Division II poll. Rombach has played in eight games this year and is averaging 8.5 points and 1.9 rebounds while also hitting 10 of 25 from 3-point range and 14 of 15 (93 percent) from the free-throw line.
Daniel Close (Sr., Ottawa) earned a 5-1 win at 157 pounds over Zach Berry of Minot State to help Minnesota State (3-1, 1-0) capture a 28-9 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win. Close is now 10-6 in overall matches and evened up his dual record to 2-2.
