Firearm deer season totals up from 2017

A preliminary total of 80,896 deer were taken by hunters during the seven-day Illinois Firearm Deer Season that concluded Sunday.

The 2018 preliminary total is more than the 80,117 deer taken during the firearm season in 2017.

That trend bore out in La Salle County, where 766 deer were taken this season, compared to 669 in 2017. The same was true in Livingston County. In 2018, 424 deer were taken compared to 364 the previous year.

The second segment of the firearm season ran from Nov. 29 through Dec. 2. In that period, 22,060 deer were taken, compared with 28,656 during the second portion in 2017. During the first segment Nov. 16 to 18, 58,836 deer were taken.

The archery deer season, muzzleloader-only deer season and late-winter antlerless-only deer season remain.
