AP POLL: Ottawa boys ranked No. 8 in Class 3A

Sandwich, Newark girls receiving votes

The impressive start to the season put together by the Ottawa Pirates boys basketball team has not been lost on prep basketball pundits across the state.

The undefeated Ottawa Pirates (6-0) came in at No. 8 in Class 3A on the season's first Associated Press Boys Prep Basketball Poll, released Wednesday. Ottawa defeated Metamora — which received votes in the Class 3A poll but did not crack the top 10 — for the championship of OHS's own Dean Riley "Shootin' the Rock" Thanksgiving Tournament to open the season and has since tallied impressive wins against both Geneseo and Princeton. Ottawa is back in action at home this Friday night against Kaneland.

Morgan Park (3-1) sits atop the 3A poll. Other No. 1 teams in the first boys poll of the year include Belleville West (6-0) in 4A, Nashville (5-0) in 2A and Cissna Park (2-0) in 1A.

In the first girls poll of the new season, a trio of Times-area teams are listed as "also receiving votes" but not cracking the top 10 — Sandwich in the de facto No. 12 spot in Class 3A, Fieldcrest as the de facto No. 21 in the Class 2A poll and Newark at the de facto No. 11 spot in 1A.

No. 1 teams on the girls side include Maine West (9-0) in 4A, Richwoods (9-0) in 3A, Harrisburg (7-0) in 2A and Danville Schlarman (6-1) in Class 1A.
