Local voices sought for new Write Team

THE ISSUE: Write Team application deadline looming

OUR VIEW: Have a passion for writing? Apply now

For those who like to write, there's an important deadline coming up.

The Times is accepting applications for its next round of Write Team members through Friday, Oct. 5.

Are you passionate about writing but are hesitating about being published?

Please don't.

You love to write, but are self-conscious about others reading your work? You're not alone with this feeling.

You don't think anyone will read your columns except friends and family? Not true. We hear from readers who are proud to read the paper front to back every day.

We strive to include lots of local voices on our opinion page. Every day. And every six months, we rotate in new Write Team members to be some of those local voices.

We believe everyone has stories to tell. You have opinions. You have observations. And believe us, while people may not always agree with you, they enjoy reading local voices.

Still nervous about applying? We're more than happy to talk with you. Feel free to call Editor Tammie Sloup at 815-431-4048.

While we always enjoy having some of our "regulars" rejoin the team, we're always looking for new voices.

The Write Team consists of local residents who write columns every other week for six months. Professional writing experience is not needed. We just ask that you have a passion for words.

To apply, send:

A short bio about yourself and why you like to write. One or two sample columns (500 to 550 words). Ideas for future columns.

Send to or mail to The Times Newsroom, 110 W. Jefferson St., Ottawa, IL 61350. Applications can be dropped off at our Ottawa office, or the Streator office at 115 Oak St. For more information, call Tammie Sloup at 815-431-4048.
