AREA ROUNDUP: Fighting Irish football, Red Raider golf suffer defeats

CLIFTON — The Seneca Fighting Irish were defeated by the Clifton Central Comets 42-14 in a Sangamon Valley Conference game Friday night.

The Fighting Irish fell behind 34-0 after one quarter against the Comets (3-2, 2-0 SVC), which scored on a fumble return and a pair of punt returns in the opening stanza. Seneca scored twice in the fourth period.

Logan Bruss rushed 23 times for 97 yards and a TD, while Ken Sangston threw for 40 yards, including a scoring strike to T.J. VanNess. Brody Baudino also recorded 45 rushing yards for Seneca, which was outgunned 259-229 in total yards.

Seneca (2-3 overall, 1-2 SVC) travels to Gilman next Friday to face Iroquois West.

Boys golf

Hinckley-Big Rock 173, Earlville 183

The Raiders lost to the Royals in a Little Ten Conference dual meet.

For Earlville, Branson Vahl shot a 43, and Tyler Bretsch and Jake Pickert 45s. Rounding out its top four scorers were Jeremy Weymouth (50).

Boys soccer

Elgin St. Edward 4, Somonauk 0

At Somonauk, the Bobcats (5-6-2) were blanked by the Green Wave in a nonconference match.

Sophomore football

Morris 34, Ottawa 14

At King Field, the Corsairs (2-3) fell to Morris in a NIB 12 crossover game.

Jake Serby (reception from Briar Naggs) and Mason Embry (73-yard kickoff return) scored Ottawa's TD. Noah Smith had 24 yards receiving for Ottawa. Defensively for the Corsairs, Cedric Fairrow had 12 tackles and Pierce Miller eight. Ty Trovero had a fumble recovery.

Sandwich 34, Streator 6

At the SHS Athletic Fields, the Bulldogs (0-5, 0-2) were beaten by Sandwich in an I-8 Large game.

Dewayne Nutall (2-yard run) scored Streator's touchdown.

Brayden Bryan had 48 yards rushing for Streator. Brayden Bell completed three passes for 34 yards, two of those for 28 yards to Aiden Webb.
