An Ottawa-area involuntary manslaughter case goes to trial Tuesday.
Mason T. Shannon, 43, is charged with causing Michael Castelli's death in July 2017, by putting him in a chokehold during an altercation at a property northeast of Ottawa. Shannon, who is free on $50,000 cash bond, now lives in Mason City, Iowa.
Shannon has opted to have Chief Judge H. Chris Ryan Jr., rather than a jury, decide innocence or guilt.
Shannon was first charged with involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors later tried to have a grand jury upgrade the case to murder, but the grand jury declined, leaving the involuntary manslaughter charge the sole charge.
