UPDATE: Morris man killed in crash on I-80

Emergency crews were on the scene Thursday afternoon.
Emergency crews were on the scene Thursday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded to a crash that killed a Morris man Thursday afternoon in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 less than a mile east of Route 47 in Morris. Traffic backed up in both directions and the eastbound ramp from Route 47 was closed by Morris police.

Colson Brian Cole, 20, of Morris and formerly of Plainfield was killed when his Ford Fiesta crossed the median and struck a tractor-trailer about 4 p.m. Thursday.

“Preliminary investigation indicates a vehicle was traveling westbound on I-80 and the driver lost control of the vehicle entered the median,” according to a news release from Grundy County Coroner John Callahan. “The vehicle then traveled out of the median into the eastbound lanes and was struck by a tractor-trailer. “

According to a statement from the Illinois State Police, Cole lost control of his vehicle when it struck a Ford Taurus also in the eastbound lanes.

The impact cut the car in half and the front portion of the car was trapped under the semi.

“This portion of the car with the driver trapped inside was then pushed approximately 300 feet east coming to a rest in the south ditch,” according to the coroner’s release.

The coroner’s office pronounced Cole dead at the scene. The drivers of the other two vehicles involved reported no injuries.

Traffic stopped on the interstate after the crash, with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office telling drivers on Facebook to instead take U.S. 6 to Brisbin Road.

The crash remains under investigation.
