Soderholm, Battle appearing at Peru show

The Illinois Valley SportsCard and Comic Show will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8 and 9, at Peru Mall, running from 10 a.m. to close Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Saturday's autograph guest will be former Chicago White Sox third baseman Eric Soderholm; Sunday's will be former University of Illinois Flyin' Illini star Kenny Battle.

The two-day vendor fees are $30 for one table, $50 for two tables and $60 for three tables. For more information, contact Dave at 815-830-1677.

Shepherd softball opens 1-2

The Shepherd Lady Rams softball club dropped its first two games of the season — 1-0 to Pontiac (Brynne Sember pitching a three-hitter and striking out four), then 3-0 to Putnam County (Peyton Bryson three hits allowed; Michaela Froisland and Eva Heimsoth with singles).

Shepherd then defeated Princeton 18-2, with Sember (eight Ks, three hits allowed) pitching the win. Offensive leaders included Ryleigh Stehl and Peyton Bryson with two singles apiece.

Lady Knights remain undefeated

Marquette junior-high softball improved to 4-0 on the season with a 14-2 triumph over Ransom/St. Michael. Abbey Thumm (single, two doubles) and Gabby Hortega (double, two singles) led the 15-hit attack, with Lindsey Kaufmann (single, double), Sophia Flavin (two singles), Eva McCallum (double) and Kaylee Killelea (double) also leading the offense. Winning pitcher Killelea, Kaufmann and Hortega combined two allow just one hit from the circle.

Woodland softball scores victories

The Woodland junior-high softball squad split a twin bill with Flanagan, falling 6-1 in the opener despite pitcher Taylor Cuchra allowing no earned runs, striking out three, doubling and scoring on a Clara Downey RBI. WJHS then won the second tilt 18-3, led by Kaileigh Benner (pitching win, nine strikeouts; RBI double), Ayana Miller (single, double, three runs), Masie Benstine (RBI double) and Jadyn Yuhas (three runs scored).

Woodland then defeated Grand Ridge 15-5. Benner (four Ks) pitched the win, Olivia Chismarick had two hits, Cloee Johnston doubled, homered and drove in three, Ella Derossett drove home two, and Yuhas doubled with two RBIs.

The Woodland "B" team defeated Pontiac 6-3, with Cuchra striking out six in the win, Chismarick providing two hits, Cuchra with two RBIs, and Abby Losey driving in a run.
