MIDLAND, Ohio — The Ottawa Savings Bank Expos split their initial two pool play games in the AABC Connie Mack (18U) Mid America Regional Tournament on Monday.
In its opener, Ottawa got a bases-clearing triple in the home half of the seventh from Mateo Sanchez to edge Ultimate Grit, 4-2. Alex Stevenson was superb on the mound for the local club and picked up the win.
"Alex was just lights out," said Expos coach Brian Price. "Mateo and Peter (Walsh) both had some big hits for us, too, but Alex kept us in the game until the bats came around. I can't say enough about him. He put us on his shoulders and carried us in that first game."
The Expos, however, fell behind 5-0 to Nashville in their second game and lost 9-4 to a club that Price called "the best team we've seen all year."
Ottawa concludes Pool A play Tuesday at 10 a.m. against the Midland (Ohio) Braves.
"We'll definitely have our work cut out for us tomorrow," the coach said, "but it felt really good to get at least a split today."
