The American Red Cross will team up with local firefighters to promote fire safety and install smoke alarms Saturday, May 5.
Red Cross volunteers will be canvassing neighborhoods, installing free smoke alarms and helping families create escape plans in the event of a fire in Marseilles, Streator and Naplate.
The Red Cross will be stationed 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 9 Northpoint Plaza, Streator, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Ottawa.
The Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters a year, the majority of which are home fires. Working smoke alarms in a home cut the risk of death by half, and having an escape plan further improves the odds of survival.
Across the country, the Red Cross’ Home Fire Campaign has installed more than 1.2 million free smoke alarms since April 16.
