The Ottawa Art League created two new scholarships for local students who are following their artistic passions.
Each scholarship will be $1,000 paid out in $250 increments for each of four years to a senior this year who is planning on majoring in an artistic field in college or art school.
Applications can be downloaded from the art league’s website, ottawaartleague.org, or emailing the league at ottawaartleague@ yahoo.com for a copy. The deadline for entry is Tuesday, May 15. The scholarship winners will be announced Friday, May 25.
The first is the Ruby Jovanovich Scholarship. Jovanovich was a founding member of the Ottawa Art League and its first president in 1968. Jovanovich died in 2002 and left 46 unsold paintings. Her family donated those to the art league and they have been sold to fund a scholarship. Art league members donated material and time to update the paintings for sale. The art league thanked Music Suite 408’s art gallery and all the people who purchased the paintings.
The second is the Mary Ellen Davies Scholarship. Davies was a longtime member of the Ottawa Art League and her family and friends donated money in her memory to help young artists. For many years the art league has used this money to present artists with awards at the Annual Youth Art Show. Since that show will not be held in the future, the art league has decided to offer a scholarship instead.
