JUST AS THINGS GOT GOING ...

The much-anticipated nonconference softball and baseball meetings between visiting Somonauk and host Marquette Academy got underway Wednesday, but were halted by lightning and rain before going official. There are no plans to resume the contests. The baseball game was scoreless in the top of the third, with Marquette managing four hits but no runs against Somonauk starting pitcher Clayton Morris, while the Bobcats had one hit against Cru starter Bryce Foster, who struck out six. On the softball diamond in a matchup of state-ranked Class 1A teams, Marquette had just taken a 3-0 lead in the home half of the second on back-to-back RBI hits from Abbey and Emily Owens. Pictured, Abbey Owens slides in safely past the tag of Somonauk catcher Amaya Zimmerman for the third run seconds before thunder halted play.
