The public can join hundreds of the region’s best prep athletes and Bears great Charles "Peanut" Tillman at the inaugural Most Valuable Athletes Awards Celebration at 7 p.m. on June 13.

This red-carpet event at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center in DeKalb will recognize standout athletes from around Shaw Media’s coverage area in northern Illinois, which includes more than 120 high schools.

A top overall athlete will be named in each of the prep sports we cover annually, and a male and female athlete of the year also will be honored. Winners will be chosen from among the region's very best athletes by a panel of Shaw Media sports editors.

Hub Arkush, NFL broadcaster and editor of the national Pro Football Weekly publication, will be the emcee for the evening, which will include video highlights, award presentations, a buffet-style dinner and more.

Tillman, the former Bears cornerback known for his knack for punching the football out of ball-carriers’ hands, will give the keynote speech.

Tickets for the event cost $40 each and can be ordered online at shawmediaevents.com/e/shawmva.
