ON CAMPUS: Thompson closes out year with win for Upper Iowa

Upper Iowa University junior and former Serena High School pitching standout Jaclyn Thompson finished off a strong season for the Peacocks.

Thompson earned the victory in Upper Iowa's 10-3 season-ending triumph over Minnesota State University Moorhead on Saturday after striking out 11 and allowing six hits over five innings. She ended the season with a 7-7 mark and an ERA of 4.09 in 15 starts (seven complete games) while compiling 88 strikeouts in 90 2/3 innings in the circle for the Peacocks (20-24, 7-17 Northern Sun Conference).

Mikayla Greenwood (Sr., Streator) helped Illinois College extend its winning streak to eight games in a 7-4 win over Lawrence University on Sunday by going 3-for-4 with a run batted in. Greenwood has played in 29 games this season and posted three doubles and eight RBIs for the Lady Blues (23-9, 15-3 Midwest Conference).

Lake Land College is currently on a four-game win streak and boasts an overall record of 44-15 and Great Rivers Athletic Conference mark of 28-4. Delanie Johnson (Fr., Streator) is hitting .408 with 20 doubles, seven home runs, 60 RBIs and nine stolen bases for the Lakers. Rachael Quaritsch (Fr., Flanagan-Cornell) is batting .347 with four doubles, three triples and 15 knocked in. Picther Samantha Forrest (Fr., La Salle-Peru) is 3-1 with a save and an ERA of 4.00 while recording 15 strikeouts in 35 innings.

Sydnee Stalker (Jr., Marquette) has made 22 starts for Iowa Wesleyan University (7-25, 5-11 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) this year and has posted a pair of doubles and eight RBIs.

Waubonsee College is 15-29 on the season after splitting a doubleheader with Harper College on Saturday. Nicole Krupp (So., Somonauk) leads the Lady Chiefs with a .441 average as well as 15 doubles, 15 home runs and 43 RBIs, along with earning six wins in the circle with 75 strikeouts in 115 innings. Destinee Corral (Fr., Sandwich) is hitting .237 with nine RBIs and nine stolen bases. Claire Avery (Fr., Sandwich) has a .250 average with two doubles, a triple and 13 RBIs. Pitcher Julia Penman (So., Paw Paw) has recorded five wins and fanned 28 in 82 innings of work.

Elmhurst College (15-19, 6-10 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) split a league twin bill with Carroll University over the weekend, with Emily Despain (So., Ottawa) earning the complete-game win in the opener and Bailee Krantz (So., Somonauk) tossing a pair of scoreless innings in the afternooncap. The win improved Despain to 10-7 on the season. She now has 10 complete games in 17 starts with an ERA of 2.53 while fanning 65 in 108 innings pitched, while Krantz has recorded 26 strikeouts in 56 frames.

Rachel Sangston (Fr., Seneca) has pitched in 23 games (17 starts, 14 complete games) for Joliet Junior College and is 14-5 with an ERA of 3.76. She has 42 strikeouts in 119 innings for the Wolves (30-18).

West Virginia Tech's Skylar Connelly (Jr., Ottawa) is currently batting .341 with 10 doubles, a triple, 23 RBIs and 12 stolen bases for the Golden Bears (21-27).

Maggie McGurk (Fr., Streator) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing a hit, walking one and striking out one in the University of Toledo's loss to Central Michigan last Friday. McGurk has now made 12 appearances, including two starts, for the Rockets (31-17, 15-5 Mid-American Conference) this year and is 0-1 with a 2.77 ERA and nine strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings.

Chelsea Fogarty (So., Ottawa) is 4-8 in 14 games (12 starts, nine complete games) for Clarke University (17-29) with 35 strikeouts in 70 innings pitched.


NJCAA Division II No. 9-ranked Parkland College has won six straight games. Trystin Raikes (RS-So., Marquette) is batting .317 with five doubles, nine home runs and 40 RBIs for the Cobras (33-11). Evan Snyder (So., Marquette), who fanned all three batters he faced in a recent win over Lincoln, has an ERA of 1.59 with 25 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings.

Track and Field

Western Illinois University's Nick Olson (Fr., Woodland) placed 14th in the javelin on Thursday at the 109th Drake Relays with a personal-best throw of 172 feet, 8 inches. He then finished 10th in the shot put (47-4 1/2) at the Simpson College Kip Janvrin Open on Saturday.

Eastern Illinois University's Maria Baldwin (Sr., Fieldcrest) finished ninth in the 500-meter run in a time of 17 minutes, 20.1 seconds at the Drake Relays on Thursday.
