Ask The Times: Residency requirements for murderers

Q. I heard a report on the radio that Carl Reimann (a former Sandwich resident convicted of murdering five people at a Yorkville restaurant in 1972 who was paroled last week) has listed his residential address across the street from a school in La Grange. Is it legal for a murderer to live next to a school?

A. Yes. Convicted murderers do not have residency restrictions upon being released from prison. Convicted sex offenders, on the other hand, have residency restrictions that do not allow them to live within 1,000 feet of schools, child care facilities or the victim.
