AREA ROUNDUP: Lady Pirates, Lady Irish, Lady Indians and Raiders pick up wins

EAST PEORIA — The Ottawa Lady Pirates — powered by the pitching and hitting of Sloan Gayan — defeated the East Peoria Raiders 4-1 in a nonconference game Monday afternoon at EastSide Centre.

Gayan struck out 15 batters, while allowing an earned run and four hits with two walks during her complete-game performance in the circle. She also hit a two-run homer in the opening frame.

Cassie Claus was 2-for-3 at the plate, including a double, for Ottawa (15-2). Molly Harris doubled as well.

Seneca 5, Lisle 4

At Seneca, the Lady Irish dug themselves an early hole, but rallied to defeat the Lions in an Interstate Eight Conference contest.

Lyda Robinson had three hits, including a double, to lead the Seneca (21-1) offense. Taylor Bushman had a pair of hits and a double as well. Kylie Winsor and Grace Flatness had two runs batted in apiece.

Flatness recorded the win in the circle. She allowed four runs (three earned) and seven hits with six strikeouts in five innings pitched.

Sandwich 13, Plano 0

At Plano, the Lady Indians beat the rival Lady Reapers in an I-8 game.

Brianna Avery went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, three runs scored and four stolen bases to lead the Sandwich (10-6, 7-3) offense. Grace Schmidt, Lixy Lopez (two doubles, four runs), Tara Bohnstedt (triple, four runs batted in) and Ava Knepper (double) all added a pair of hits. Hailey Ruhl homered and had two RBIs. Megan Schwartz also had two RBIs.

Schmidt fired a two-hit shutout in the circle, walking four batters and striking out 13.

Earlville-Leland 4, Serena 3

At Serena, the Raiders edged the Lady Huskers in an LTC contest.

Skyler Brue (two-run homer), Emily Cook, Jadyn Pickert, Julia Niles (two runs scored) and Taylor Weymouth all had a pair of hits to lead the Earlville-Leland (12-5, 9-2) offense.

Kennedy Meloy went the distance in the circle to record the win. She gave up four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Kylie Shannon and Emily Hook (2-for-3, double) each had a pair of hits for Serena (10-8, 8-4). Brianna Engel (7 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 10 H, 0 BB, 9 K) was dealt the loss.


Geneseo 7, Ottawa 6

At Geneseo, the Pirates were up 6-1 after five and a half innings of play before the Maple Leafs put up a six-spot in the bottom of the sixth to snatch the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division win.

Ryan Wendt had a triple and two runs batted in for Ottawa (9-13 overall, 2-5 NIB 12 West). Logan Cheatham, Alex Stevenson and Brandon Sauvageau accounted for the other Pirate hits. Nathan Weitzel (1/3 IP, 3 ER, 1 H, 1 BB, 0 K) was charged with the pitching loss.

Lisle 4, Seneca 3

At Seneca, the Fighting Irish were edged by the Lions in an Interstate Eight Conference contest.

All seven runs were scored during the opening inning.

Altman went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double for Seneca. Myles Mitchell also had a double. Sam Grushkin (7 IP, 4 ER, 5 H, 4 BB, 5 K) took the pitching loss.

Sandwich 7, Plano 3

At Plano, the Indians defeated the rival Reapers in an I-8 game.

Austin Salemi went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Sandwich (9-10, 6-4) offense. Andrew Gipe and Wyatt Murphy each added a pair of hits. Christopher Schiera and Jake Pfaff both homered and had two runs batted in apiece.

Gipe went the distance on the mound to get the win. He surrendered three unearned runs and two hits with no walks and nine strikeouts.

E-L-PP 15, Serena 8

At Serena, the Raiders rallied back from an early 5-1 deficit after two innings by scoring 14 runs over their final four at-bats to defeat the Huskers in a high-scoring Little Ten Conference affair.

Grant Campbell went 4-for-4 at the plate with a triple and four runs batted in to lead the Earlville-Leland-Paw Paw offense. Tyler Bretsch (3-for-3, double, four runs scored) and Jared Pickert (3-for-5, triple, double, four RBIs, three runs) added three hits apiece. Keegan Johnson (double) and Justin Shannon (2-for-3, two RBIs) each had a pair of hits. Tim McNally doubled.

Porter Wesson (3 IP, 2 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 1 K) was credited with the win on the mound.

Connor Baker went 4-for-5 for Serena. Preston Duffy was 3-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs. Greg Breese (2-for-3, four runs) and Ivan Stafford (three RBIs) each had two hits. Baker (4 1/3 IP, 10 R, 2 ER, 10 H, 4 BB, 5 K) took the loss.

Somonauk 27, LaMoille-Ohio 3 (5 inn.)

At LaMoille, the Bobcats put up 11 runs during the opening frame en route to the LTC win over the Lions in five innings.

Andrew Johnson went 4-for-5 at the plate with two home runs, a double, seven runs bated in and three runs scored to pace the Somonauk (14-0-1, 11-0) offense. Nolan Wegener was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Jake Willette, Sam Brooks, Steven Kenyon, Clayton Morris and Isaiah Nunez all added a pair of hits. Brady Kreiter (two RBIs) and Justin Steorts (two hits, three RBIs) both homered as well.

Kenyon (2 2/3 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K) got the win on the mound.

Fieldcrest 8, LeRoy 6

At LeRoy, the Knights defeated the Panthers in a Heart of Illinois Conference contest.

Hayden Carls (3-for-4), Michael Morse (3-for-4) and Derek May (3-for-3, triple, two runs batted in) all had three hits to lead the Fieldcrest (7-6, 5-4) offense. Ryan Naas doubled and had a pair of RBIs. Matt Cook had two RBIs as well.

McKoy Allen (6 1/3 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 11 H, 3 BB, 3 K) got the win on the mound. Landon Cook (2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 K) notched the save.

Boys tennis

BCC 7, Streator 2

At Bloomington, the Bulldogs fell to Central Catholic in a dual meet.

Posting a singles win for Streator was Greg Rashid at No. 1 (7-5, 6-1 over Ben Holley). Notching a doubles victory was Rashid and Alex Granados at No. 1 (3-6, 6-3, 10-8 over Holley and Brian Wieland).

Sophomore baseball

Streator 10, Wilmington 9 (8 inn.)

At Wilmington, Streator moved to 9-2 on the I-8 loop and 14-3 overall with its extra-inning win over Wilmington.

Christian Bedecker (triple) and Mason Telford (two doubles, three runs batted in) had three hits apiece to lead the Streator offense. Mason Benning (double), Drew Schmitt (double) and Tony Rath all added a pair of hits.

Telford (4 IP, 4 R, 5 H, 3 K) got the win on the mound in relief of Payton Benning (4 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 3 K).

JV softball

Ottawa 5, East Peoria 2

At East Peoria, Abby Bukantis recorded the win in the circle for the Lady Corsairs during their win over East Peoria.

Freshman baseball

Ottawa 11, Geneseo 3

At Whitney Field in Ottawa, the Vikings beat Geneseo in a NIB 12 West game.

Matt Ahearn (triple, double, three runs batted in) and Briar Naggs (two doubles, four RBIs) both went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Ottawa offense. Ethan Regan (three runs scored) and Michael Bruner were each 2-for-3. Adam Weitzel doubled.

Bruner got the win on the mound. He allowed two earned runs and six hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings pitched.
