LONG POINT AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY
Long Point American Legion Auxiliary sent boxes of homemade cookies and other items to 41 active duty members of the military, including 188 dozen cookies Auxiliary members and residents of the village and surrounding area provided. Hearthside Food Solutions, of Wenona, Casey’s, of Flanagan, and Girl Scouts, donated packaged cookies. Other items were donated by dentist Dr. Supan of Gridley, Country Companies, Pioneer dealer Darrel Loudon and Flanagan-Cornell School.
Woodland School and Flanagan-Cornell School wrote letters thanking the military men and women for serving. About 20 Auxiliary and Legion members and volunteers from Streator, Long Point and Flanagan met at the hall to pack the boxes. Donors gave several hundred dollars to cover the cost of postage and 21 thank-you letters were sent to donors who supported the project.
One of the boxes was received by Staff Sgt. Jeffrey Weaver and wife Staff Sgt. Chey Weaver at Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas. It contained a letter from Chey’s cousin, Jaron Follmer, a Woodland student in Amber Decker’s fourth-grade class. The couple arranged to visit the class at Woodland. Students were excited to meet the couple and learn about how the military serves and defends the country.
Thirty-one boxes were sent to active military within the U.S. and seven were sent to those deployed overseas. The cookie boxes have been an annual service project of the unit as a way to show support and appreciation for the active military.
