Auditions set for 'Fools'

Indian Valley Theatre auditions for  “Fools by Neil Simon and directed by Brad Shortridge will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 25; 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 28; and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 30, at the Sandwich Opera House, 140 E. Railroad St., Sandwich.

Be prepared for a cold reading from the script. No appointment is necessary and IVT membership is not needed to audition, although it is required if cast. Audition forms may be downloaded prior to auditioning on IVT’s website.

In "Fools," Leon Tolchinsky is ecstatic. He’s landed a terrific teaching job in an idyllic Russian hamlet. When he arrives he finds people sweeping dust from the stoops back into their houses and people milking upside down to get more cream. The town has been cursed with chronic stupidity for 200 years and Leon’s job is to break the curse. No one tells him that if he stays more than 24 hours and fails to break the curse, he too becomes stupid. But, he has fallen in love with a girl so stupid she has only recently learned how to sit down.

The cast calls for the following characters: Male roles: Leon (The teacher, 20s to 35. This is a large role); Dr. Zubritsky (father of Sophia, 50-plus); Gregor Yousekevitch (the villain, 20-plus). Female roles: Sophia (The student, 20s); Lenya Zubritsky (Sophia’s mother, 50-plus); Yenchna (florist, 50-plus). Adult roles that can performed as either male or female, age unimportant, include Snetsky (the shepherd); Magistrate (the keeper of law); Slovitch (the butcher); Mishkin (the postal employee).

Performances will be Wednesday, July 20, to Friday, July 22, at the Sandwich Opera House.
