Lady Bulldogs boot away chances against Morris

STREATOR — After a scintillating extra-inning road victory over Interstate Eight Conference foe Lisle on Friday, the Streator Lady Bulldogs were hoping for more of the same when they returned home to face former Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference opponent Morris Saturday morning.

Unfortunately, the Lady Bulldogs couldn't sustain the momentum they established less than 24 hours earlier after committing six costly errors that proved to be the main downfall in a 4-2 non-conference loss to the Redskins here at the SHS Athletic Fields.

The half dozen fielding gaffs helped squander a solid pitching performance from sophomore Ellie Magana (2-3), who allowed just one earned run, nine hits, and one walk while striking out six.

Streator (5-10) also struggled to solve Morris starting and winning pitcher Gigi Corban (7 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 5 BB, 8 K), who wiggled out of some brief jams where the Lady Bulldogs left nine runners on base overall and five in scoring position on the day.

But in the end, it was the glut of fielding miscues that ultimately sunk Streator.

"Ellie did a great job pitching but we just didn't support her defensively today," said SHS coach Dawn Williams. "Unfortunately when a team commits six errors in a ballgame and gives up three unearned runs that proved to be a big difference in a tight ballgame there wasn't any room for that many mistakes. We also got runners on and didn't advance them when we needed to with key hits which also put us in a tough position. It's disappointing because this is a game we could have realistically won today."

In addition to Corbin's fine outing in the circle, Morris (11-9) also received three hits from senior Ashley Phelps and two apiece from senior Abbey Moore and freshman Kennedy Dransfeldt.

"We definitely took advantage of their errors when we needed to with some timely hitting and I also thought Gigi pitched a pretty good game even though she lost a few batters with walks," said MHS coach Jennifer Bamonte. "Other than that, we had some mental errors that we need to improve upon. We've battled hard with a tough schedule so far this year against some good teams including today where I thought Streator played a nice game overall."

The Lady Bulldogs got on the board first with their only two runs against Corban in the bottom of the second inning.

Sophomore Maddie Barichello led off with a walk and was replaced on the base paths by senior courtesy runner Megan Gubbels. Junior Grace Schmitz followed with another base on balls before senior Aubrey Durdan reached with an infield dribbler that loaded the bags with no outs.

There Corbin recorded an out with no harm before junior Tessa McClellan (2-for-3) laced a two-run double to left center that plated Gubbels and Grace Schmitz that made the score 2-0 after two innings.

"I thought she (McClellan) had a very good game at the plate today," Williams said. "She got us started with a nice double in the gap. Unfortunately, that was all we could get from there."

The Redskins countered quickly in the top of the third when Moore led off with a single and came home on Phelps RBI double to left. Phelps would eventually tally on a Streator error to even the score at 2-2.

From there a stalemate ensued in the circle between Magana and Corbin until the top of the seventh.

That's where Streator booted the ball its last two times which resulted in the final pair of Morris unearned runs after RBI at-bats from juniors Claire Gugerty and Olivia Schultz.

Corbin then closed out the Lady Bulldogs one-two-three in the bottom of the frame to end the frustrating contest for the locals.
