AREA ROUNDUP: Cru win again; Streator sweeps at Lisle

OTTAWA — Freshman Luke Couch delivered a game-winning, two-run single in the home half of the seventh inning Friday afternoon to give the Marquette Crusaders a 2-1 win over Crossroads Christian Academy at Masinelli Field.

Nate Melvin went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double to lead the Marquette (13-0) offense. Kyle Cook was 2-for-3. Hunter McAlpine (2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 3 K) was credited with the win on the mound in relief of starter Max Mitchell (5 IP, 1 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 4 K).

Streator 4, Lisle 3

At Lisle, the Bulldogs scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the Lions in an Interstate Eight Conference contest.

Joey Byers homered for Streator (7-5 overall, 4-3 I-8). Kyle Cantrell was 2-for-3 at the plate. Mitch Vickers had two runs batted in. Peyton Phillis scored a pair of runs.

Jacob Bemont went the distance on the mound to get the win. He allowed two earned runs and seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Wilmington 6, Seneca 0

At Wilmington, the Fighting Irish were blanked by the Wildcats in an I-8 game.

Brendan Newkirk and Cole Underhill accounted for the two Seneca hits. Avery Othon (4 IP, 5 ER, 7 H, 2 BB, 0 K) took the pitching loss.

Hinckley-Big Rock 8, Newark 5

At Newark, the Norsemen were defeated by the Royals in a Little Ten Conference game.

Ethan Jeffers was 2-for-3 at the plate for Newark. Jacob Slivka (5 IP, 7 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 11 K) was dealt the pitching loss.

GCMS 6, Fieldcrest 5

At Gibson City, the Knights dropped a back-and-forth Heart of Illinois Conference contest to the Falcons.

Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley plated three runs in the first inning and led 4-2 after six innings before Fieldcrest scored three times in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead. The Falcons scored twice in the home half, though, to get the "W."

Noah Nordstrom was 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored for the Knights. Matt Cook had two runs batted in. Derek May, who took the pitching loss (6 2/3 IP, 6 R, 3 ER, 9 H, 1 BB, 4 K) had a triple.


Streator 6, Lisle 4 (9 inn.)

At Lisle, the Lady Bulldogs scored twice in the top of ninth inning to defeat the Lions in an Interstate Eight Conference contest.

Ellie Magana (3-for-5, double, three runs scored), Maddie Barichello (3-for-4, four runs batted in), Grace Schmitz (3-for-5, triple, double, two RBIs) and Aubrey Durdan (3-for-4, double) all had three hits to lead the Streator (5-9, 3-4) offense. Mallory Aukland added a pair of hits.

Anna Yanek went the distance in the circle to record the win. She allowed four earned runs and 11 hits with two walks and 15 strikeouts.

Seneca 8, Wilmington 4 (8 inn.)

At Wilmington, the ICA Class 2A No. 14 state-ranked Lady Irish scored five runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Ladycats in an I-8 contest.

Taylor Bushman and Britney Helms had three hits apiece to lead the Seneca (14-1, 6-0) offense. Hayley Wilson, Lyda Robinson, Gillian Culbreth and Maggie Carpenter (two-run homer in the eighth) all added a pair of hits. Kylie Winsor doubled home a pair of runs in the eighth inning.

Carpenter went the distance in the circle to record the win. She allowed four runs (three earned) and five hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts.

Newark 12, Hinckley-Big Rock 2 (5 inn.)

At Newark, the Lady Norsemen beat the Lady Royals in five innings in a Little Ten Conference game.

Alyssa Schofield (two runs batted in), Jocelyn Mitchell, Becca Sweeney (2-for-3, two doubles) and Riane Tomsa (triple) all had a pair of hits to lead the Newark (6-2, 3-1) offense. Nikki Kala drove in three runs and crossed the plate three times. Emily Schofield had two RBIs.

Sophie Schomer (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 6 K) recorded the win in the circle.

Track and field

Lady Pirates compete in Geneseo

Th Ottawa Lady Pirates totaled 79 points to finish fourth out of five teams in the Geneseo Invitational.

Ottawa got a trio of first places from Sam Satterfield (37 feet, 5 inches in the shot put and 107 feet in the discus) and Grace Reinhardt (5-2 in the high jump).

Maddy Smith was runner-up in the pole vault (nine feet). Grace McGettigan (2 minutes, 30 seconds in the 800 run) and Rachel Mueller (13:50.3 in the 3200) both placed third in their respective events.

Bulldogs, Lady Bulldogs compete at Normal

At Normal, the Bulldogs had five individual and one relay top three finishes, while the Lady Bulldogs recorded four top four places at the Normal Community Co-Ed Invitational. The boys finished with 14 points to put them in a tie for fifth with Bloomington, while the hosts captured the event with 30. Team scores weren’t kept in the girls meet.

Tre Rathbun led the way for the Streator boys, winning the triple jump in a leap of 39 feet, 8.5 inches, placing second in the long jump (20-8.5) and third in the high jump (6-0). A.J. Ramson earned a second in the 100 (:11.2), Adrian Jones and third in the 800 (2:09.7), with the 400 relay team of Rathbun, Ramson, Jones and Kobie Webb finishing third (:45.5). The Lady Bulldogs received a second-place mark from Rebecca Neaterour in the 3200 (12:37.7), fourth place from Leticia Cruz in both the 200 (:28.7) and 300 (:53), and Emma Harris took fourth in the discus (102-1)

Eagles runner-up in Rock Falls

The Illinois Valley Community College men's golf team opened its spring Arrowhead Conference tournament season with a runner-up finish at Rock River Golf Club in Rock Falls.

Scoring for IVCC — which shot a team score of 223 to finish behind Black Hawk College (311) — was Ottawa High School graduate Carter Piercy (78), Matt Hoscheid (79), OHS grad Connor Soenksen (82) and Nick Guisti (84).

Sophomore/JV baseball

Streator 11, Lisle 1 (5 inn.)

At the SHS Athletic Fields, Streator moved to 9-2 overall and 6-1 in I-8 play with its win over Lisle in five innings.

Drew Schmitt had three hits, including a double, to lead the Streator offense. Mason Telford added a pair of hits and two runs batted in. Christian Bedecker doubled and had two RBIs.

Payton Benning (4 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 6 K) got the win on the mound.

WFC 24, Dwight 12

At Dwight, Brad Simpson and Brandon Wargo had three hits each, including a double apiece, to lead the Woodland/Flanagan-Cornell offense in its win over Dwight. Aiden Boyles added a pair of hits and scored three runs. Cody Dodge got the win on the mound.
