Bench trial set for manslaughter case

One of the defendants in an Ottawa manslaughter case wants a judge, not a jury to decide his case.

Mason T. Shannon, 43, is charged with causing the death of Michael Castelli, July 20, by putting him in a chokehold during an altercation at a property northeast of Ottawa. Shannon, who is free on $50,000 cash bond, lives in Mason City, Iowa.

At a court hearing Thursday, Shannon said he wants to have Chief Judge H. Chris Ryan Jr., rather than a jury, decide guilt or innocence. Shannon's next hearing is Thursday, May 17, with trial Thursday, June 21.

Joseph J. Brewer, 22, rural Ottawa, is also charged in connection with Castelli's death. Brewer, who is free on $25,000 cash bond, has his next hearing Thursday, May 17.
