Q. I had someone at my door in Ottawa asking to check my water filters. Are they legitimate?
A. According to a statement by Ottawa Police Chief Brent Roalson, residents should not let solicitors into their home.
Roalson said solicitors are sometimes permitted to solicit within city limits. They are required to register with the police department and undergo a vetting process. Solicitors are required to carry the permit with them and display upon request. Roalson reminded residents not to show solicitors documentation with personal information on it, such as a bill.
If a solicitor becomes persistent, demanding, belligerent or cannot provide the solicitation permit, contact the police department at 815-433-2131 or call 911 immediately.
