Rain barrels are containers that capture rainwater for later use in a garden, for house plants or to wash a car, among other uses. Rain barrels effectively reduce the amount of rainwater that reaches the city’s sewer system and can help prevent the occurrence of drainage backups, according to an Ottawa is Blooming news release.
Citywide use of rain barrels can help reduce flooding. The barrels also reduce pollution by capturing water that otherwise would mix with pesticides and automobile fluids that eventually flow to the river.
A pickup day event is scheduled between 9 a.m. and noon Saturday, May 19, at Garden’s Gate, 611 Dayton Road, Ottawa.
Rain barrels will not be sold at the pickup event. Only preorders will be accepted. Buyers should bring a copy of their receipt for pickup.
Residents may also choose to have their rain barrel sent directly to their home from Upcylce Products for an additional charge when ordering.
Ottawa's rain barrel program is consistent with city’s combined sewer separation long-term control plan, the Ottawa Flood Commission’s campaign for public information, and the Ottawa is Blooming Committee’s environmental initiatives.
