STREATOR — Even though it was still a little chilly outside, the Streator Lady Bulldogs and Herscher Lady Tigers were able to play their second game of the home-and-home series in Interstate Eight conference play Tuesday.
Like Monday’s game at Herscher (a 12-10 Streator win), a big inning decided things as Herscher scored four runs in the top of the sixth to break open a 7-2 win at the SHS Athletic Fields in Streator.
Herscher was able to take advantage of three Lady Bulldogs errors at critical times in the contest.
“I tell the girls that there is a big difference between JV softball and varsity softball,” said first-year SHS coach Dawn Williams. “In JV softball, if you make a couple of errors you can still pull out a win. In varsity softball, we have to clean up some of our errors so we can stay on top and win some games.”
Herscher took a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning and, after losing pitcher Aubrey Durdan (7 IP, 2 ER, 5K) got Grace Mendell to fly out to third baseman Chole Castillo, Ana Howard was able coax a walk on a 3-2 pitch and gave the Lady Tigers their first runner of the inning.
Herscher took advantage of two straight Streator defensive miscues, with the first one sending Howard home from second for a 4-2 lead. A Hallie Outsen single sent home courtesy runner Sophie Mau from third to give the visitors a 5-2 lead. An RBI double by Mollie Cann plated two more runners, and the Lady Tigers had a 7-2 advantage.
Durdan ended the day throwing 121 pitches in the loss. That is something that Herscher coach Mike Cann says his team is getting better at — working the count.
“The kids are getting better at being paitent,” Cann said. "Instead of getting up there and swinging away, they are seeing some pitches. We like for them to hit the ball. We like for them to look at some pitches.”
In the first inning, Gabby Schultz got the visitors going with a triple to right field and scored on a single by Chole Jefferson. Jefferson came home after Mendell reached on an error to give Herscher a 2-0 lead.
Streator came right back in the home half of the first inning to tie the game at 2-2.
Ellie Magana led off the inning against winning pitcher Sam Guance (2 ER, 2 K) with a single to left and scored from first on a Maddie Barichello double to center to cut the Herscher lead in half, to 2-1.
Megan Gubbels entered the game as a courtesy runner for Barichello and went to third as Chole Castillo flew out to Mendell in right field. Gubbels came home on a Schmitz single to center.
Magana, Barichello, Schmitz and Alivia Adkins all had two hits for the Lady Bulldogs (3-6 overall, 1-1 in the I-8). Barichello had two doubles.
Schultz and Outsen each had three hits for Herscher (4-3, 1-1).
Streator will try to make up a game against Interstate Eight rival Plano on Thursday at the SHS Athletic Fields.
