Ottawa Art League is creating two new scholarships for students following artistic passions. Each scholarship will be $1,000 paid out in $250 increments for each of four years to a graduating high school senior planning on majoring in an artistic field in college or art school. Applications can be downloaded from ottawaartleague.org or emailing email@example.com for a copy. The deadline for entry is Tuesday, May 15. Winners will be announced Friday, May 25.
The first is the Ruby Jovanovich Scholarship. Jovanovich was a founding member of the Ottawa Art League and its first president in 1968. She died in 2002 and left 46 unsold paintings. Her family donated those to the OAL and they have been sold to fund a scholarship. OAL members donated material and time to update the paintings for sale. Thanks are due to Music Suite 408’s art gallery and all the people who purchased the paintings.
The second is the Mary Ellen Davies Scholarship. Davies was a longtime member of the Ottawa Art League and her family and friends donated money in her memory to help young artists. For many years the OAL used this money to present artists with awards at the annual Youth Art Show. Since there will be no show in the future, the OAL has decided to offer a scholarship instead.
