OTTAWA SUNRISE ROTARY
Guest speaker for Ottawa Sunrise Rotary April 6 was Arnie Bandstra, Ottawa’s retired assistant city engineer and a leader in the preservation and restoration of the Illinois & Michigan Canal in Ottawa.
As a member of the Ottawa Canal Association, Bandstra told Rotarians Father Jacques Marquette actually started the idea of a canal in 1673, but the Ottawa canal was not finished until 1848. Many travelers going west for the gold rush of 1849 used the canal for transportation, enabling them to go from the East Coast to the Mississippi River. This summer, the canal rewatering project will begin with a groundbreaking on Sunday, July 1.
President Mike Matteson opened the meeting. Seargent-at-Arms Rick Scott and Bruce Brown drew tickets for the weekly drawing. Scott quizzed members on weather trivia. Members should turn in Rotary Foundation donations for the Uganda Project.
The next meeting will be at 7:15 a.m. Friday, April 13, in the conference room of OSF St. Elizabeth Medical Center.
