ON CAMPUS: Sandwich's Roberts running strong for Benedictine

Benedictine University sophomore and former Sandwich High School standout distance runner Emma Roberts continues to run well for the Eagles while shattering school records along the way.

Roberts was named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Week on April 2 after setting the school record (17 minutes, 30.46 seconds) in the 5000-meter run and finishing eighth of the 136 runners at the Washington University Invitational. This past weekend at the Benedictine Invitational, Roberts finished fourth in the 1500, breaking the school record by 10 seconds (4:40.92), while winning the 3000 and besting her own school record in a time of 10:15.32.

Softball

University of Toledo swept a three-game, Mid-American Conference series from Bowling Green over the weekend to improve to 25-13 overall and 9-1 in the loop. Pitcher Maggie McGurk (Fr., Streator) has currently made 10 appearances (two starts) for the Rockets, posting an ERA of 2.14 with eight strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings of work.

Pitcher Rachel Sangston (Fr., Seneca) improved to 8-3 on the season for Joliet Junior College after earning a complete-game win in the Wolves' 5-4 win in eight innings at Prairie State on Sunday. Sangston allowed just three earned runs and scattered eight hits in the triumph. She now has made 13 appearances (10 starts, eight complete games) fanning 25 in 60 2/3 innings with an ERA of 4.04.

Lake Land College improved its winning streak to 10 games with a 17-0, 11-0 doubleheader sweep of Southeastern Illinois on Saturday. Delanie Johnson (Fr., Streator) extended her hitting streak to six straight and is now hitting .431 with 14 doubles, five homers, seven stolen bases while leading the team with 51 RBIs. Rachael Quaritsch (Fr., Flanagan-Cornell) is batting .500 with three doubles, two triples and 10 RBIs. Pitcher Samantha Forrest (Fr., La Salle-Peru) has thrown 18 innings in eight appearances (two starts) and is 2-0 with a save. Forrest has seven strikeouts and an ERA of 3.89 for the Lakers (32-11, 20-2 Great Rivers Athletic Conference).

Skylar Connelly (Jr., Ottawa) is hitting .301 with seven doubles, a triple, 12 RBIs and eight stolen bases for West Virginia Tech (8-24, 2-6 River States Conference).

Baseball

Millikin University is currently 12-10 overall and 2-6 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Infielder Seth Coffey (Sr., Ottawa) is hitting .300 for the Big Blue with three doubles and seven RBIs, while relief pitcher Brandon Viken (Jr., Seneca) has pitched three innings in three appearances with a pair of strikeouts and a 3.00 ERA.

Karter Lowery (Fr., Ottawa) is hitting .250 with a double, two triples and four RBIs for Heartland Community College (22-5).

Ohio University closer Jake Roehn (RS-Sr., Sandwich) has struck out 19 batters in 16 innings pitched while allowing just 13 hits. In 13 games he is 1-3 with four saves for the Bobcats (15-14, 4-5 MAC) with an ERA of 3.38.

Parkland College's Trystin Raikes (RS-So., Marquette) is batting .323 with five home runs, 23 RBIs and a six-game hitting streak for the Cobras (19-8).

Hunter Simon (Fr., Seneca) fanned two in an inning of work for Illinois Wesleyan University in the Titans' 3-2 loss to Wheaton College on Saturday. In six appearances this season, Simon is 1-1 with nine strikeouts in six innings pitched.
