Car hits Peru fire vehicle, driver charged

State police handled two crashes in the past few days on Interstate 80 near Peru, including one involving a fire department SUV.

A car driven by David J. Smith, 28, Princeton, hit the rear of a Peru Fire Department command vehicle at about 1:34 a.m. Monday. The fire vehicle was present because of a crash there. After hitting the fire vehicle, Smith continued driving west, but a state police officer pulled him over a short distance away.

There were no injuries, but Smith was charged with DUI and leaving the scene of a crash.

Another crash occurred at about 9:50 p.m. Sunday on the same stretch of road.

A semitrailer driven by Paul Pfannenstiel, 49, Davenport, Iowa, hit a box truck driven by Nazamud D. Malik, 65, Sterling Heights, Mich., while passing the box truck. Both vehicles went off the road. Pfannenstiel suffered minor injuries; Malik was not injured.

Pfannenstiel was cited on a complaint of driving too fast for conditions.
