Ask The Times: Burning ditches

Q. I've seen farmers burn ditches in Livingston and Grundy counties but not La Salle. Is it illegal to burn ditches in La Salle County? Why do some landowners burn ditches instead of mowing?

A. La Salle County Farm Bureau Manager Kayla Hinrichs said there is no law banning landowners from burning ditches in La Salle County; however, she advises residents to follow city ordinances on open burning.

As for why some landowners burn a ditch, Hinrichs said some cases arise when it is easier to burn than mow due to the depth of a ditch. In other cases, landowners may burn to get rid of woody plants in the ditch because mowing only chops them down, and they eventually grow back. Burning also can clear out leaves and brush.
