Marseilles VFW Post 5506 recently recognized student winners of the VFW Patriot Pen Essay Contest at Seneca Grade School.

This annual contest provides valuable writing experience and a chance to win a monetary scholarship and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C.

Fifty-Seven students from Ann Las’ Class entered the contest. The student winners received a special VFW certificate and presentation folder, an engraved medal and a check.

Brandi Johnson won first place in the post and district level judging. She also will be recognized at the 9th District VFW meeting in Ottawa on Sunday, April 29.

Brianne Johnson garnered second place at the post level. Peyton Weber achieved third. Teacher Las was awarded a first place Teacher of the Year VFW certificate and presentation folder for winning the post level competition and a special plaque and check for placing second in the district level teacher competition. While no student or Las was selected for state level recognition, the Marseilles VFW said it was proud of their performance.
