ROCKFORD — The Ottawa Pirate boys tennis team won two of its three matches Saturday at the Rockford Boylan Quad to finish runner-up in the event that took place indoors. It was Ottawa's first meet since its season opener on March 17.
For Ottawa, Jack Marvel was runner-up at No. 1 singles (beating Boylan's D. Renteria, 6-2, 6-0 and East Moline United Township's B. Downey, 6-1, 6-2 and losing to Streamwood's A. Veltkamp, 6-2, 6-1) while Tyler Olesen placed third at No. 2 singles (losing to Boylan's A. Klein, 6-2, 6-2 and UT's Dave Reynolds, 6-0, 6-2 before beating Streamwood's B. Morgan, 6-0, 6-0).
Both Pirates doubles teams were runner-up: Nathan Meyer and Logan Olszewski at No. 1 (losing to UT's Getty and Moreno, 6-3, 7-5 before blanking Steamwood's Wilson and Luna, 6-0, 6-0 and Boylan's Cyrs and Peterson, 6-0, 6-0) and Declan McGettigan and Andrew Hancock at No. 2 (losing to UT's Fedele and Kipp, 6-1, 2-6, 10-8 before blanking Streamwood's Yang and C. Luna, 6-0, 6-0 and Boylan's Clay and Consuelos, 6-0, 6-0).
Streator 14, Pekin 6
At the Avanti's Dome in Pekin, the Lady Bulldogs plated a trio of runs during each of their initial three plate appearances to build a 9-2 advantage after three innings of play and propel them to the nonconference win over the Lady Dragons.
Streator (2-5) pinged out 18 hits, including eight extra-base knocks. Chloe Castillo paced the offense by going 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run, two doubles and three runs batted in while scoring three runs. Ellie Magana was 3-for-5 with a triple, double and four runs scored. Anna Yanek (homer, three RBIs), Maddie Barichello (two RBIs), Alivia Adkins (double) and Tessa McClellan all added a pair of hits. Grace Schmitz also doubled and brought in a pair of runs. Megan Gubbels crossed the plate three times.
Yanek went the distance in the circle to record the win. She allowed six runs (two earned) and eight hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.
