Area products shining on the college diamond

Auburn University of Montgomery senior and former Marquette High School standout Curtiss Johnson is putting together a pretty good season for the Warhawks. Johnson, seeing a majority of time at first base, is hitting .284 with three doubles, a home run and 10 RBIs for AUM (13-20, 4-14 Gulf South Conference) and has hit safely in four of his last six games.

Pitcher Hunter Simon (Fr., Seneca) earned his first collegiate win on Saturday, when after he allowed a run on two hits in the bottom of the eighth inning against Millikin University, Illinois Wesleyan University (11-6, 2-2) scored seven times in the ninth to secure an 11-7 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin victory. Simon has pitched five innings in five appearances with seven strikeouts this season for the Titans.

Seth Coffey (Sr., Ottawa) has started all 18 games for Millikin University (10-8, 0-4 CCIW) and is batting .300 with three doubles, a home run and seven RBIs. Relief pitcher Brandon Viken (Jr., Seneca) has worked three innings in three appearances with a 3.00 ERA and a pair of strikeouts.

Rockford University (6-8) swept a doubleheader from Dominican University over the weekend. Bryce Hinkelman (Sr., Marquette) had a single in a 4-1 win in the opener and an RBI double in a 7-3 second-game triumph for the Regents. Pitcher Dalton Morris (Sr., Marquette) started the nightcap and received a no-decision after working 4 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and fanning two. Hinkelman is hitting .418 with a pair of homers and 15 RBIs, while Morris has struck out 13 in 13 innings pitched.

Knox College is 5-10 overall and 1-3 in Midwest Conference play. Brady Sember (So., Woodland), who is hitting .389 with a home run, recently went 3-for-5 in the Prairie Fire’s 14-9 loss to Monmouth College. Adam Brown (Fr., Streator) is batting .333 and went 1-for-3 with a walk in Knox’s 7-5 victory over the Scots.

Karter Lowery (Fr., Ottawa) is hitting .250 with a double, two triples and four RBIs for Heartland Community College (20-5), which is ranked No. 16 in the NJCAA Division II poll.

Parkland College (17-8) is ranked No. 12 in the NJCAA Division II poll. Trystin Raikes (RS-So., Marquette) is hitting .314 with two doubles, two triples, five home runs, 21 RBIs and is currently on a six-game hitting streak. Pitcher Evan Snyder (So., Marquette) has appeared in three games with 14 strikeouts in six innings pitched and an ERA of 3.00.

Ohio University took two of three games from Northern Illinois University over the weekend to improve to 14-12 overall and 3-3 in the Mid-American Conference. Closer Jake Roehn (RS-Sr., Sandwich) is 1-2 with five saves in 12 appearances and has 18 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings with an ERA of 3.07.


Elmhurst College is currently 5-11 overall and 0-2 in the CCIW. Pitcher Emily Despain (So., Ottawa) is 3-5 with an ERA of 3.02 in seven starts (four complete games) and has fanned 30 batters in 44 innings pitched. Fellow hurler Bailee Krantz (So., Somonauk) is 0-4 in five starts and has 14 strikeouts in 28 2/3 innings of work.

Pitcher Rachel Sangston (Fr., Seneca) has made nine apperences (seven starts) and is 6-2 with a 3.47 ERA for Joliet Junior College (16-8). Sangston, who has recorded 22 strikeouts in 40 1/3 innings, suffered a tough-luck, 3-2 loss to Priaire State on Saturday after allowing just six hits and one earned run in seven innings.

Mikayla Greenwood (Sr., Streator) helped Illinois College (8-6) in a doubleheader sweep of Fontbonne University. Greenwood, who has a hit in four consecutive games, went 2-for-2 in an 8-1 victory in the opener and added a single in the Lady Blues’ 5-2 win.

Lake Land College (28-11) is on a six-game winning streak. Delanie Johnson (Fr., Streator), who has hit safely in 20 of her last 22 games, continued her strong play boasting a .422 average with 12 doubles, four homers, a team-leading 45 RBIs and six stolen bases. Rachael Quaritsch (Fr., Flanagan-Cornell) is batting .500 with a pair of doubles, two triples and eight RBIs, while pitcher Samantha Forrest (Fr., La Salle-Peru) is 2-0 with a save in 16 innings pitched with a 4.38 ERA.

Pitcher Jaclyn Thompson (Jr., Serena) is 4-5 in 12 appearences (11 starts) for Upper Iowa University (14-12). Thompson has thrown 61 innings, allowing 51 hits and 54 strikeouts. She also has six complete games, including a pair of shutouts.

West Virginia Tech’s Skylar Connelly (Jr., Ottawa) is hitting .293 with seven doubles, 12 RBIs and six stolen bases for the Golden Bears (8-20).

Chelsea Fogarty (So., Ottawa) has registered a 4-7 record in 12 appearences (11 starts, nine complete games) for Clarke University (8-18). Fogarty has pitched 66 1/3 innings, striking out 41 with an ERA of 3.38.
