A Peru ambulance on Thursday collided with a car as it was taking a critically ill patient to the hospital, police said.
The ambulance going to Illinois Valley Community Hospital was headed east on Fourth Street in Peru shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday when it collided with a vehicle headed south on Peoria Street, according to the Peru Police Department.
Based on a preliminary investigation, it is believed the traffic lights on Fourth Street were red, while Peoria Street's lights were green. The ambulance's lights and sirens were activated, police said.
The four on board the ambulance were treated and released, as was the driver of the second car. The critically ill patient was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital, police said.
The investigation into the crash is being conducted by Peru police. The La Salle County coroner’s office is investigating the patient’s death.
Peru police accident investigators reopened the intersection about two hours later.
Names of those involved as well as any traffic charges to be filed will be released pending completion of the initial crash investigation report.
