New hearing set in SAFE suit

A judge has scheduled a new hearing in the legal struggle over SAFE funds.

La Salle County State's Attorney Karen Donnelly took action last summer to retrieve $573,451 in SAFE money passed on to Spring Valley, Ottawa and La Salle. On Dec. 15, Grundy County Circuit Judge Robert Marsaglia dismissed the suit, but allowed Donnelly to refile the suit with different arguments, which she has done. On Wednesday, Marsaglia set the next hearing for Monday, March 5.

SAFE stands for State's Attorney's Felony Enforcement unit, which former State's Attorney Brian Towne formed in 2011, but which was ruled unlawful and abolished in 2015.
